Perfect Day is a love story that follows the events in Matthew's life. Navigating divorce, falling in love, and trying to get by after the death of his second wife the script explores major concepts in religion, philosophy, and metaphysics and how these theologies translate to modern life. It wrestles with issues like addiction, codependency, and treatment and calls into question the motifs and effectiveness of institutions that profit from the whole endeavor. It also addresses the nature of love and marriage and likewise calls into question the institutions that codify and regulate what marriage is.Perfect Day reads like a song book. Taking it's name from the famous song by Lou Reed the music chosen to accompany each scene carries the script, often saying the things left unsaid by the characters. Listening to it's soundtrack is a read between the lines. Likewise, Perfect Day is jam packed with other popular culture references to film and television that both ground the story in time but also provide context for the stories being told.Perfect Day is also a portrait of a city. It takes place mostly in Rochester, Minnesota in the shadow of, and often the halls of, the Mayo Clinic. From its hospitals, to its courthouse, to its bars and restaurants there is little about this city that isn't touched in some way by the pages of this script as it explores both the best the city has to offer and a look at it's underbelly. The events in Perfect Day are based on real events in the author's life though the names have been changed and some characters fabricated for adaptive purposes. In many ways Perfect Day is an autobiographical account of an artist's life falling apart then finding out how to put it back together. Read more
